Citizen Cryptid is the community tabloid of NoWhere's Lower Aetherway district. Published by The Editors, Issue 47 (We Think). Rumors, classifieds, verified-buyer reviews from Thuh Kwikken Ecee, and a crossword Parliament would very much like recalled.
Twelve candidates. One seat on Signal Auger. Campaign materials recovered and filed for public reference. Helene Paquet, Tobias Brass, Simon Twisted, Olympia Hook, Batina, Body Kaiser, and Silla Payne are all running. Only one of them knows what the position actually involves.
The first dispatch. What Citizen Cryptid is, who The Editors are (unresolved), and why the Lower Aetherway needed a tabloid specifically. Includes a classified for a Bottle Saint willing to work at an unregistered frequency, and a correction to last issue's Zodiac Horoscope that was somehow more accurate than the original.
A sealed city-state behind the Veil. Approximately 625,000 permanent residents across forty districts in four regions — Northern (5), Eastern (11), Southern (15), Western (9). The Veilfall happened during a war. Parliament filed it and moved on. The city did the same. The war has not moved on.
Full name: Kadrey Pallium. Contemporary usage: just "the Kadrey." Seven pocket-dimension floors. Staff hierarchy: Pallbearers, Mantles, The Seat. Officially: a psychiatric and registration facility for high-Threshold practitioners and anomalous cases. Actually: the city's filing cabinet for everything Parliament can't classify and can't release. Scorch is a patient. Glass Tennasee broadcasts from the Drift Ward. The Director's chair has been occupied by a person nobody on staff knows is an operative for forty-three years.
The city's governing body. Manages the Accord registration system — any practitioner above Threshold 2 is required to register their Source, pathway, and Contact with the Parliament's Civic Memory Office. The CMO runs the Mnemonic program. Parliament funded the Hollow March experiments. The official record says the experiments were discontinued. The record was filed by the CMO.
The ambient energy of impossible things. Four Sources: Resonant (attuned to the current), Pactbound (bound to a Patron), Scrapwork Arcana (volatile ingenuity), Nullfaith (denial of Frequency as a genuine force — which, paradoxically, works). Frequency has been rising steadily since the Veilfall. Parliament has classified the rate of increase. The Kadrey has noted it. Neither institution has published the numbers.
Entities that predate the Accord system and often predate the Veilfall. The Kismet platform — predates Dialtone, predates the Accords, Parliament finds this annoying rather than actionable — functions as a registry. Patrons range from the Machine Pantheon (Parliament registered, operational) through the Deep Register (Vorgrath, Grisgog) to the Static Deities (not yet classified, possibly emergent). Oli the Mailman has a Kismet profile. The platform cannot remove it. It has stopped trying.
The Ontics (good guys, roughly — Blue Flower graffiti, Soma-adjacent, SUBJECT BLANK in CMO files). The CMO (bad guys, operationally). The Vespertine Duskers (Eclipse Wardens, five Circles post-Grayline). The Rooks (Liminal Dervish, Driftward, Route Registry). The Akkadian survivors (Parliament-made, Parliament-denied, community of survivors). The Daybreak Order (cell structure, knows Alden Rosen caused the Veilfall). The Kadrey (institution, patient population, the Drift Ward). The Parliament (three-layer structure, nominally in charge).
Dialtone is NoWhere's social platform — the one that predates all the others and that Parliament has repeatedly failed to fully moderate. Its vocabulary: Crosslines (comment threads), Signal Spikes (trending), Open Channels (video), Static Muted (disabled accounts), Dead Air (inactive), Frequency Surges (viral).
Dialtone exists in the NoWhere universe as the place contested and unconfirmed theories live. Not redundant confirmations — the contested edge of what the city believes. The Grayline numbers (47 in, 26 dead, 21 out) are discussed. Never confirmed on Dialtone. The only confirmation point is player-facing, in Scene Seven of Me and My Shadow. Dialtone doesn't get to know for certain. Neither does anyone who isn't in that room.
